About: Artist

Born in 1946 and raised in New York City, Eric Gordon was immersed in the arts from an early age. Encouraged by his mother, an avid art enthusiast, he spent countless hours in Manhattan’s galleries and museums. His creative pursuits began with drawing and painting, later expanding to stained glass and welded sculpture.

Although his formal training was in the sciences, Eric remained deeply engaged in the arts. With inspiration from his uncle, Julius - a scientist who influenced his academic path - Eric pursued a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. He lived near Princeton, New Jersey until 1992, when he relocated to Palo Alto, California, where he resides today.

Over the course of a 50-year career in drug discovery, Eric dedicated himself to improving human health. He worked at a major pharmaceutical company, founded three biotech startups, spent a decade as a venture capitalist, and served as an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University. His scientific contributions include over 100 U.S. patents and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Eric has always approached science with the mindset of an artist. In the last decade, he has returned to art full-time, developing a unique process of painting on horizontal glass plates. This method allows him to capture dynamic, kinetic interactions impossible in traditional easel work. His evolving body of work is featured in the Gallery section of his website.

More recently, Eric has pioneered a new approach he calls “Self-Assembly Art,” which explores the intersection of art and science - reflecting both his creative instincts and scientific background.

Eric works from two home studios in Palo Alto: one dedicated to painting and the other to printing and framing. His artistic practice is fueled by joy and curiosity, and he hopes to share that sense of discovery and delight with others through his work.
